Families may access the following Infant Hearing Program (IHP) services depending on their child’s needs.
Newborn hearing screening helps find babies who need more hearing testing.
It is standard for all babies in Ontario to get a hearing screen after they are born.
Newborn hearing screening is available for all Ontario newborns up to two months old.
For premature babies, this means 2 months from the baby's due date, not their birth date.
Audiology or hearing testing can detect hearing loss and determine if it is permanent. A complete test can determine the type and severity of the hearing loss. Knowing as much as possible about hearing helps determine which supports can be offered for the child and family.
Testing with an Infant Hearing Program (IHP) Audiologist may be recommended for children who ‘refer’ on their newborn hearing screening.
Some children with risk factors for permanent hearing loss may continue to see an IHP Audiologist over time to monitor their hearing, even if they passed newborn hearing screening.
Audiologists provide ongoing support to monitor and manage a child’s hearing over time.
