Services

Families may access the following Infant Hearing Program (IHP) services depending on their child’s needs.

Newborn hearing screening helps find babies who need more hearing testing.

Newborn hearing screening is available for all Ontario newborns up to two months old.

For premature babies, this means 2 months from the baby's due date, not their birth date.

For more information, visit the Newborn Hearing Screening page.

Audiology or hearing testing can find hearing loss and determine if it is permanent. A complete test can tell what type and degree or size the hearing loss is. Knowing all about hearing is needed so that supports for the child and family can be offered.

Testing with an Infant Hearing Program (IHP) Audiologist may be recommended for children who ‘refer’ on their newborn hearing screening.

Some children with risk factors for permanent hearing loss may continue to see an IHP audiologist over time to monitor their hearing, even if they passed newborn hearing screening

Audiologists help families understand and choose the hearing technologies (e.g. hearing aids) available to their child and provide ongoing support to monitor and manage their child’s hearing over time.
